In order to track our spending in each country we visit, we are keeping a spreadsheet of overall expenses. We have decided to keep track of our expenses for interest sakes, to help others plan a trip, as well as to make sure we do not run out of money!
We spent a total of 18 days between Singapore and Malaysia with a total bill of approximately $1,700 which includes:
Accommodation (hostels and hotels)
Food & Toiletries (the bare essentials – food, shampoo, soap, etc)
Liquor (everyone needs a few beers here and there)
Transportation (public transit, buses, trains, etc)
Entertainment (what we paid to do) and
Miscellaneous items (clothing, laundry, books etc)
TOTAL COSTS
Accommodation – $785*
Food & Toiletries -$320
Liquor – $135
Transportation – $180
Entertainment – $205
Miscellaneous items – $35
*please note – this includes 2 nights at the Shangri-La in KL…after 3 months of hostels you need a good break…which impacts the overall
AVERAGE COSTS
Our average cost per day between Singapore and Malaysia was $92, without our fancy hotel break it would have been $85.
Note: ALL costs are for 2 people and in CANADIAN FUNDS!
FLIGHTS
We have not included our flights between countries in the costs listed above to prevent skewing the overall costs of the country because we never know where people are coming from. But to help out, our one way tickets from Darwin, Aus to Singapore were $450 for the both of us with Virgin Blue and our flights from Singapore to KL were $55 with Tiger Airways.

I like spreadsheets what can I say
HI,
Would you share us what airline you used to fly from SG to KL?
Because $52 is quite cheap, malaysian airlines costs about 400+ SGD for 2 people :-s
Joy
We caught an incredible seat sale on tiger airways, I believe we paid 1 SGD for the each flight and the taxes on top of that, we booked about 2 weeks in advance.
