Life on the Mekong – Pictures from the Slowboat

Our slowboat trip from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw was one of the highlights of Asia. The 9 hour boat ride took us through some of the most spectacular scenery along the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers which play a central part in the livelihood of many people living along the river. From washing clothes to netting fish to irrigation to transportation, the rivers are essentially the lifeblood of many villages in the country. Life along the river is different than the rest of Laos – still a simple way of life that has been unspoiled by waves of development and technology…don’t think it will be like this forever! Anyways, check out the pictures and let us know what you think!

Those low boats remind me of the green boat when you guys used to all pile in. I was reading an article on the Mekong River from 1987, and those photos describe exactly what the piece said. It looks like not much has changed in 24 years.
