In southern Laos we checked out Pakse and Don Khon. Pakse is a small city we stopped over in for a while to break up our trip to Don Khon…because to get from Phonesavan to Don Khon you have to go back to Vientiane before heading south. Our bus trip from Vientiane to Pakse was interesting enough – wait for episode 8.
Pakse was a nice stop over over for us, we met some really nice locals that just opened an awesome cafe and relaxed for a couple days. If you are ever in the area visit Mommaten at Bolaven Farms, she makes the best ice mocha and is the sweetest lady!! To get to Don Khon from Pakse was easy, we just hoped on a tuktuk for a four hour journey and then grabbed a boat on the Mekong.

Jackie cruisin' on the Mekong to Don Khon Island
Don Khon is a very quiet island on the Mekong, the entire parameter for the island is 6 km. The atmosphere of the island was very relaxed, and reminded me much of the people in Nong Khiaw. The locals on the island are very rural, everyone grows rice, raises chickens, cows, andwater buffalos, and fishes the Mekong every night. It was not an uncommon sight for there to be cows walking beside you on the road and chickens running everywhere.

The main drag on Don Khon Island
While we were on the island we rented bikes, once again, to check it out except this time we got sweet single speeds with baskets. We biked our way to the waterfalls on either side of the island, and to try and spot some rare dolphins in the river, unfortunately no luck. Other then that we pretty much spent our time relaxing in hammocks by the river reading and taking in sunsets. This was definitely a nice relaxing end to a somewhat crazy trip through Laos.
