Australia – Overall Costs of Backpacking

In order to track our spending in each country we visit, we are keeping a spreadsheet of overall expenses. We have decided to keep track of our expenses for interest sakes, to help others plan a trip, as well as to make sure we do not run out of money!

We spent a total of 30 days in Australia and our total bill for our Aussie experience was approximately $5,400 which includes:

  • Accommodation (hostels and campsites)
  • Food & Toiletries (the bare essentials – food, shampoo, soap, etc)
  • Liquor (everyone needs a few beers here and there)
  • Transportation (car rentals, gas, public transit, buses, ferries, etc)
  • Entertainment (what we paid to do) and
  • Miscellaneous items (clothing, laundry, showers, etc)

TOTAL COSTS

Accommodation – $1,310*
Food & Toiletries -$920
Liquor – $285
Transportation – $1,535
Entertainment – $1,025
Miscellaneous items – $320

*please note that we did stay with family for 3 nights in Melbourne and 4 in Canberra, therefore there were no accommodation costs for those nights.

AVERAGE COSTS

Our average cost per day for Aus was $180.

Note: ALL costs are for 2 people and in CANADIAN FUNDS!

FLIGHTS

We have not included our flights from New Zealand to Aus in the costs listed above to prevent skewing the overall costs of the country since we never know where people are coming from. But to help out, our one way tickets from Queenstown, New Zealand to Melbourne, Aus were $290 for the both of us on Jet Star Airlines.

Ouch – Oz is beautiful, but it ain’t cheap, eh?

Just out of curiosity…how did you guys budget for your trip? Was it a rough daily average for the entire time you were away, or did you break it down per country??? We are being lazy, and just saying $100/day…recognizing that some countries will be more, some less…but ….I am wondering if we should be more specific…?

    Hey Guys!

We budgeted for our trip in a very similar way, but used more like $120/day. Aus and NZ we both expensive, but worth the money to say the least. Malaysia (see link under planning) was cheaper and Thailand is shaping up to be much the same. I think as long as you keep good track of what you are spending you should be okay. However, it never hurts to have some back-up money in the bank, or on a LOC for emergencies or a little bit longer of a trip. Hope this helps.
